Purchasing lights is the easiest yet, a complicated task.As per our usual notion, we start thinking about buying lights when the wiring andswitches and everything related to electrical fittings are done and dusted, we then invest our time in buying lights. But if you ask me, we need to select the right kind of light much before we plan the false ceiling or the pop work to enhance some corners and make them look more attractive than others or maybe have a full lighting option for different moods and get them on automation mode.

I usually suggest house owners to have 3 kinds of lights in the places they spend most of theirtime. like their living room or their reading room or maybe bedroom. Let’s take a look.

When You Have Young Crowd At Home

You need to project the best of everything when your guests are home. That’s why it should be bright, beautiful and lively. Hence, the ambience should reflect energy.

For Cozy Evenings

Not always, but you will have these moments when you want your space to be cozy for you and your family and definitely you don’t want the lights to hurt your eye.

Daily Usual Self

This is how your house is lit on the daily basis. Just the basic lights you need in the evening to make it look alive and running. Neither less to make the home dull and haunting, nor too much to worry about the electricity bill.

Apart from these 3 concepts, following are a few things you need to keep in mind while purchasing:

Style

It is very important that the lights you select are as per the design and go with the theme or are in contrast with the theme.

Shape and size

We often tend to choose what we like instead of really thinking if it is in the same proportion of the furniture size and room space. The shape and size play a pivotal role in getting the final look of the place. Always take pictures of the lights, go to the site and imagine them at the place. Trust me it helps!

Angle of the lights

Not everyone knows, but apart from chandeliers, all your other lights need to be directed and controlled as per the requirement especially when you want to focus on the feature wall or mural or a painting maybe! You got to make sure that there are no dark spots in between lights in the most used areas unless required for special effects.

Fact: Did you know it takes 3 different angle lights to actually highlight a sculpture? 15degrees at the bottom level, 45 degrees from top right and a flat light that spreads through the whole space.

Color of the light

Yes! You get different colors of light for different spaces and it should be a smooth transition or else it will look like a “mixed fruit juice”. There are white, natural white, warm light, and colors like blue, purple, orange etc. Choose the right color as per the ambience and purpose of the space. For example, a space, which will only be used for entertaining guests and is a sit out, I would suggest a natural light or warm light. But a space which is used for sitting and reading, it should definitely be a white light. Home theatre can be preferred a blue back lit.

And finally! WATTAGE

Everything boils down to the wattage of light. Less means the space looks dull, possible headaches often, and bad mood all the time! Too bright hurts eyes and possible headache again. Calculate the area space and plan the spread of light and wattage. Different wattage has different effect on the surface and also, different color. So, change the wattage as per color you choose as well.

I hope the above insights help you choose better lights and help making your space look more beautiful. Because ultimately lights are the key to any ambience. See you soon with yet another blog.
